Joseph James Jerr is an income and estate tax planning attorney in the Private Client Services Group. He helps clients design and implement strategies for protecting, maximizing, and transferring assets during their lifetimes and after, at the least financial and emotional cost.

Joseph grew up in the Chicagoland area and has been practicing law since 2008. He received an undergraduate degree from Northwestern, where he worked with two psychologists before gaining admission to pursue a doctoral degree in psychology. Choosing to study law instead, he found a passion for finding solutions to complicated problems and issues. During law school, he served in the Honors Program at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and completed a judicial externship for Illinois Supreme Court Chief Justice Anne M. Burke (retired), thereafter joining a Chambers-ranked law firm in Chicago representing large corporations.

He eventually left private practice to complete a legal fellowship as a Special Counsel in the Kolkata office of International Justice Mission, a human rights agency working on behalf of children. After discovering a passion for protecting and advancing the interests of individuals, families, their businesses, and their philanthropies, he earned a LL.M. in Tax Law from New York University School of Law, focusing on trusts and estates.

“I like getting to know our clients, their hopes and dreams and what they want their legacies to be. I want them to feel comfortable speaking with me about personal and sensitive matters, even during what can be stressful moments in their lives. Every client is unique with different goals, and each one deserves the highest level of attention and service.”
